The 2023 Ontario Ice Fishing Challenge happens Feb. 1 until Feb. 28. The Town of Espanola and the Township of Sables-Spanish Rivers are both community sponsors of the online fishing derby, which is live now for registration.

There is a $20 fee to join, but anglers can grab up to $8,000 in provincial prizes by uploading their catches on the MyCatch mobile app. In addition, local prize lots will be announced.

The contest is open to all ages, with community sponsors vying for the honour of being crowned the Ice Fishing Capital of Ontario. Fishermen/women can find the rules and criteria for uploading pictures and can register at https://www.anglersatlas.com/event/609/2023-ontario-ice-fishing-challenge-2023 .

The website keeps track of all registered members and what communities they represent, has a leaderboard and other valuable details. All species of fish are included in the contest, and prizes are awarded in many different categories. With the contest running for the entire month of February, anglers can fish without a license on Family Fishing Weekend Feb. 18-20.

The site reminds contestants to fish safely and ensure that when venturing out there is adequate (at least four inches) and safe ice.
